Posted on: 01 December 2013

Oman’s biggest team golfing event, now in its second edition, the Chrysler Cup has proved, once again, to be an exceptional tournament. This event, which is organised annually by Dhofar Automotive – the official dealer for Chrysler in Oman - was done in association with the Oman Golf Committee (OGC) and was conducted at Oman’s championship course, Al Mouj Golf, The Wave, Muscat on 15thand 16th November, 2013.

This event witnessed, over a two day period, an intense level of competition, combined with great camaraderie, strategy and skill from all participants – the hall mark of any top level sporting competition.  In the end, the Almouj Golf Club proved victorious, winning the Chrysler Cup 2013 from last year’s defending champions, Ghala Valley Golf Club.

Outlining the vision for the 2013 edition of the Chrysler Cup, Chris Edwards - General Manager of Dhofar Automotive, shared his insights on the tournament and its role in promoting the game of golf in the local and regional arena. “Chrysler’s slogan is ‘This is What We Do’, and in Oman – at Dhofar Automotive and Chrysler – THIS is what we do. Our endeavour was to develop an initiative that encompassed the brand essence of Chrysler quality, luxury and class. Golf, as a platform was the ideal fit, and along with the Oman Golf Committee involvement and support, we are proud to have built together, a great tournament. The Chrysler Cup, apart from helping promote the sport of golf in the Sultanate, is now considered to be the premier inter-club event that all golf enthusiasts strive to qualify for and be part of. We thank the OGC and all the club teams – Ras Al Hamra, Ghala Valley, Muscat Hills and Almouj Golf for their support and participation.” noted Chris.

“It takes a lot to put together a Chrysler Cup Tournament.  I am very proud of the achievements for this event, now in its second edition and commend our supporting partners Zeenah Events and Al Mouj Golf, both who did a tremendous job of helping us put together an event that reflected exactly what Chrysler stands for. In conclusion, my warmest congratulations to the Almouj Golf team who earned the Chrysler Cup 2013 title.”

Expressing triumph and happiness after being announced the winner of Chrysler Cup 2013, William Welsh – Captain of Almouj team, the winner of Chrysler Cup 2013, said: “The qualifying period and excitement of choosing the teams only added to the expectations of this annual tournament. The competition was professional and exciting. The club players were busy readying themselves and everybody enjoyed this get-together, which added to the overall Chrysler Cup experience. Expectations were high on the finals day, as Ghala Valley were the defending champions, and we were on home turf. We were able to secure the victory on the 17th hole. The ceremony was emotional and excellent entertainment, food and atmosphere was superb, and that moment when I raised the magnificent trophy on behalf of my team, and Almouj Golf is something I will always remember. Thanks to the Dhofar Automotive team for their fantastic support and congratulations also to the Almouj Golf team, who made history on the day.”

The Ghala Valley team put in a sterling effort for the coveted title and proceeded through the semi-finals for a spot in the finals against Almouj Golf team. Jay Townsend – Captain of Ghala Valley team, said: “It’s great to see the four clubs coming together to battle it out for the Chrysler Cup. As the defending champions, there was great excitement amongst our players to bring the cup back home. We had a fantastic battle with Muscat hills in the semi-finals and narrowly scraped through with the final result coming down to the last match on course. Congratulations to the Almouj Golf team who leapt out to a convincing lead early in the final and held strong to win the cup. Ghala Valley will be eager to reclaim the title next year and look forward to the qualifying rounds ahead. Congratulations to Dhofar Automotive for another fantastic event.” On his part, Per Sjostrand – Captain of Ras Al Hamra team, said: “Once again Dhofar Automotive and Chrysler have put together a wonderful golfing event. This year’s version of the Chrysler Cup will be remembered as one of the highlights of the whole season. All involved, from sponsors, The Almouj Golf championship course ground staff and volunteers, they created a high class treatment for the teams. I am very proud of how the Ras Al Hamra team managed to come back and narrowly win the play-off to capture third place. Congratulations to the Almouj Golf team who played superbly and truly deserved the overall victory. We are already looking forward to the next Chrysler Cup.”

Arriving with determination to book a place in such high-status tournament, the Muscat Hills team played very well and showcased great enthusiasm and professional golfing techniques. Speaking of the competition and his team’s participation, Daniel Byrne – Captain of Muscat Hills team, noted: “It was very exciting to be part of the Chrysler Cup 2013 – the format created a great atmosphere of serious competition with friendly rivalry. I cannot wait until the next Chrysler Cup as I am sure other players will rise to the top in an effort to take part in what is a great competition.”

With the collaborative efforts of local golf clubs, Dhofar Automotive and OGC, Chrysler Cup is definitely pushing the game of golf in the right direction, as stressed by Ahmed Al Jahdhamy, Vice Chairman of OGC. “It was a great competition and successful event. The Order-of-Merit was introduced by OGC as a requirement to qualify for Chrysler Cup, which brought together teams and players, and moved the game of golf from being an individual-focused game into a team-based sport. This definitely adds to the sport and it is a well appreciated initiative by Dhofar Automotive. I congratulate Almouj Golf team on their victory.” he said.As the curtains fell on a second year of a successful golf competition, all teams and players, organisers and attendees, as well as golf fans and concerned authorities, agreed on one single fact: Chrysler Cup 2013 is a great and significant tournament that will be seen as the highlight of the Oman golfing calendar, as well as a high-profile event that has raised the level of the game in Oman and places the Sultanate on the map as an emerging golfing destination.
